Zombie_eggs

This year for Easter I made Zombie Eggs. I covered the parts of the eggs I wanted to stay white (for drawing on later) with cut-out blue painter's tape. I then dipped the eggs in green and blue dyes to get the desired color. After they dried, I removed the tape and drew on the eyes, mouths, etc. on the eggs with markers. Happy Easter!

Thu, 01 Dec 2011 16:21:00 -0800 Available While Supplies Last http://ericwashburn.com/available-while-supplies-last http://ericwashburn.com/available-while-supplies-last

This holiday season I created some 'action figures' of the family. It was an idea that I thought of last year, but after I started the project, I never finished it it time for Christmas. This year I worked on it over Thanksgiving and got it done in time to get sent off for printing.
The cover of our Christmas card is the second picture. We have not thought of a good tag line for the inside or what type of "advertising" we can put on the envelope to tie it all together. Any ideas, let me know. Hope you enjoy.

When we get it back from moo.com, I'll post some pictures of the finished project.

Mon, 31 Oct 2011 11:55:04 -0700 Halloween Family Portrait http://ericwashburn.com/halloween-family-portrait http://ericwashburn.com/halloween-family-portrait
For the past seven years we have hosted "The Washburn's Halloween Bash". A tradition that was started when we were invited to a Halloween Party in the neighborhood we now live in, before we lived here. Our friends had invited us to a party at their house and we were blown away by the amount of residents that participated in the festivities.

The next year we moved in and continued the tradition of inviting friends that did not live in neighborhoods that were not so enthusiastic to participate in the fun. For seven years we hosted the event, but this year we have decided to join forces with our friends in the cul-de-sac behind us. It won't be quite like before, but I'm sure we will enjoy it. One of the traditions I have continued, is creating a 'family portrait' / invitation.

Even though we are not hosting this year, I am posting this year's family portrait. This piece was inspired by Disney's Haunted Mansion ride and is a composite made in Photoshop. I wanted to create a composition that reminded me of the ride and I feel happy about it. Hope you enjoy, let me know what you think. I have included some of the pictures I used to make the composite.

Day_1-16

Edit: I have ended the 365 Project to work on other more important priorities. I will be posting photos to another site soon and changing this site to just a blog post. Updates to follow.

I am 16 days into my 365 day photo project. The rules are that the photo must be taken and processed the day that it is posted. I have thought about doing different themes along the way, but I do not have anything concrete at the moment. It has already been harder then I thought it would, but I am not giving up.  If you get a chance, take a look and tell me what you think. You can find the full set of pictures here.

Halloween is one of our favorite times to celebrate. This will be the seventh year we are hosting the Halloween Bash. For this year's invite we went with a circus theme (because circuses are creepy ; ) ) I took photos of each of us and added the costumes, built the set with some stock photos from SXC, deviantART and google images (about 50 in all) and a bunch of textures and brushes. Let me know what you think!

Here are a few more pics from the Vegas vacation. They include "the sign" (you can't not take a picture of the sign). Hotels and casinos, the Hoover Dam, the Pinball Hall of Fame, Red Rock, Lake Mead and of course, the trip would not have been complete without lunch at an In-N-Out Burger.

A personal project compositing multiple subjects that were shot one at a time. Each child was shot individually and composited to the background. The background was shot at Sweet Water Creek Park in GA. It is an HDR of the New Manchester Mill ruins. This was a fun test to try out some techniques in photo compositing, but there are some obvious mistakes. Can you find them?

Beware_the_candy_tree

This project started awhile ago after a contest Layers Magazine did. For every issue they had a "Back Page" {http://layersmagazine.com/designcontest-winners - scroll down to the bottom, second from last group, mine is the third one on the right) contest. I entered one of them and got runner-up, but the idea I had stuck in my head and I wanted to elaborate on it. It's made from stock from http://www.sxc.hu/ and photos (of the kids) I took myself. I've worked on it, on and off, here and there, forever. It was fun, but I wanted to finish it and move on. Here's the final, a little rushed to finish it up. I'm o.k. with that.

Tue, 10 Aug 2010 10:29:57 -0700 Guy's Weekend Posters http://ericwashburn.com/guys-weekend-posters http://ericwashburn.com/guys-weekend-posters   Once a year my friends and I venture off for a "Guy's Weekend". We usually have 6 - 10 guys, mainly from our neighborhood and we rent a house somewhere near Atlanta. We go boating, grill out, play cards and drink, sometimes all at the same time. The weekends are always memorable and the stories usually get told in public surroundings (but not all of them ). Everyone has a great experience and it's nice to get away with the guys once in awhile.
This year the trip is in September and to commemorate the event, I designed some posters that represent what the weekend has been like in the past. Each poster has a story behind it, that would be to much to go into detail here for each one. For the guys that have gone on the getaway, one look at the posters and the stories instantly come back.
The posters will most likely never be printed, they weren't intended to be. The idea was to just capture that feeling again for a moment of how enjoyable the trips have been.

So the question is, after this trip, what story will go on the next poster?

Mon, 26 Jul 2010 15:51:20 -0700 Black & White Bridge http://ericwashburn.com/black-white-bridge http://ericwashburn.com/black-white-bridge During our trip to New York to see family, we decided to venture across the Walkway over the Hudson. It's a mile and a half bridge connecting Highland and Poughkeepsie. My assignment (which I gave myself) was to take pictures for the sole purpose of converting to them to black & white. Well, why not just shoot in black and white then? I wanted the practice in Photoshop. Enjoy!

Mon, 12 Jul 2010 04:23:08 -0700 Reuben Explosion http://ericwashburn.com/reuben-explosion http://ericwashburn.com/reuben-explosion This past weekend for a card game with the guys I wanted to try to make a Reuben Explosion. Many people already know about the Bacon Explosion (the over-the-top smoked pork experience). My friends and I have made the Bacon Explosion a couple of times before and had talked about making the Reuben version. One of my friends made it for the 4th of July weekend and it was awesome, so I wanted to show how it was done and add my own special touch to the recipe.

Ingredients:

2lbs. Bacon (approx. - depends on the slice - I used thin for crispier bacon)
3-4 Tb. Caraway seeds
1 1/2lbs. Corned Beef (Boar's Head)
8 slices Swiss Cheese (Boar's Head)
Sauerkraut (fresh, not canned)
1 large sheet of puff pastry (or 2 small ones)
butter

Russian dressing (buy in store of use recipe)

1. Weave the bacon into a mat. It's easier then it looks, once you get started. I laid all of the vertical pieces first (about 8-9 slices, my bacon was thin, so it will vary) and then folded every other piece of bacon down towards me. I then laid the horizontal piece down and folded the pieces of bacon back up, making the bottom part of the weave. Then fold down the other horizontal pieces (the ones you left straight before), lay down another horizontal piece and fold those pieces back up. Repeat until you have a full mat. Sprinkle with 1/2 of the caraway seeds.
2. Lay down the slices of corned beef covering the entire bacon mat.
3. Lay down the Swiss cheese, leaving an edge all around where you can see the corned beef.
4. Lay down the sauerkraut on top of the Swiss.
5. Fold in the sides of the corned beef (you are going to roll this like a burrito).
6. Get a tight roll going from one end of the Corned Beef, making sure the folded edges of the corned beef stay in. (don't roll the bacon at this point).
7. Once the roll is complete, then roll it back in the opposite direction, this time rolling the bacon mat with the corned beef.
8. Use a large toothpick or skewer to secure the bacon at each end.
9. Get your smoker ready and smoke at 220-225 degrees for 3 hours. (I added hickory chips in the beginning and at the end of smoking)
10. Remove and let cool. Then we add my special addition to the recipe.
11. I used a large piece of puff pastry (if you can't find one large enough, use two small pieces and roll the edges together.)
12. Wrap the smoked corned beef in the puff pastry and squeeze the edges of the pastry together, nice and tight to completely seal it.
13. Brush with butter, sprinkle with the remaining caraway seeds and bake in a 400 degree oven until nice and brown. ( I baked mine for about 30 mins, but I think I would go to 45 next time)

I was in hurry to get to the game, so I did not take a picture of it out of the oven or sliced, but believe me, it was a thing of beauty. Extremely moist, and when dipped in Russian dressing, gave us a fantastic alternative to the Bacon Explosion recipe.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Cookouts, a block party, fireworks and friends. What more could you ask for? It was a fantastic time and I got to shoot some shots of the kids and the nighttime celebration. Sun, 27 Jun 2010 14:49:38 -0700 My Weekend Experiment http://ericwashburn.com/my-weekend-experiment http://ericwashburn.com/my-weekend-experiment This past weekend I gave myself an assignment to shoot some HDR images. I've never done any HDR, and I just upgraded to Photoshop CS5, so I wanted to give them a try in the new merge to HDR function. I walked down to the town's square and picked out a couple of spots to try out. In about 45 minutes I had a bunch of shots to merge together and I found it a little more difficult then expected. A couple of times, I didn't quite get the exposures far enough apart. I used a tripod, but still found myself knocking the camera and starting over. Add to the fact, that is was about 95 degrees outside at 8:30 at night, gotta love the south. After merging a couple of them together I got the idea of adding a composite to them, in the style of Joel Grimes. Now, these are no where near as good as Joel's, but the whole project was a lot of fun and I can't wait to try again and try to improve.

I also have to thank my son, for helping me with this experiment. I love the fact that he enjoyed doing this.

Thu, 31 Dec 2009 05:04:42 -0800 Basketball Shots http://ericwashburn.com/basketball-shots http://ericwashburn.com/basketball-shots    I was really disappointed with the way that kid's sports photos are taken. The same backgrounds, the same poses, the same style just about every time you see one. So I wanted to try something different. I took my son to the church's gym (which this week there were no activities going on). I brought my D80, a light stand, umbrella, an sb800 and an sb600. I had my wife stand upstairs behind the hoop and direct the sb600 towards the backboard and I used the sb800 with an umbrella on my son. The whole process was about 15-20 minutes and was more of an experiment then anything else. I don't think the pictures are great, but I like them much better then the stale style that kid's sports photographer's do. I'm not saying they aren't good photographers. They have a lot of kids to photograph, in a short amount of time and it's really the only way to get it done.

I would like to go back and try again to see if I could play with the light a little more and maybe get my set up better. I would also like to hear any comments, suggestions or opinions on making these photos better. I have been taking pictures for a year and trying to learn all that I can. Thanks.
